Parents’ Association Events

The Parents’ Association is hosting a welcome event for new parents on Wednesday 15 September 2010 at 7.00pm in the Lifelong Learning Centre (LLC). This will be an informal, friendly event which will include brief presentations by the Head Boy and Head Girl about life at St Bart’s.

The Parents’ Association AGM takes place on Wednesday 8 September 2010 at 7pm in the LLC. This is a short meeting and all parents are welcome to come along and see how the committee is structured and hear how the PA benefits St Bart’s.

Ad Lucem Project

Over the summer extensive work continued on the new school buildings. This is an exciting term for the St Bart’s community and we remain on schedule to move over the October half term. The picture shows an aerial photograph taken of the new buildings at the end of July 2010.

Autumn Term 2010

The autumn term begins for all students on Thursday 2 September. Year 7 students report to Luker Hall at 11.15am. Students in Years 8 - 13 report to tutor rooms at 12.15pm. Wednesday 1 September 2010 is a staff training day.

Corn Exchange Showcase

Well over 150 musicians, dancers and actors from St Bart’s and students from George Green’s, our partner school in London, took to the stage at the Corn Exchange on 30 June. This was an excellent show with many outstanding performances. Also, some of the St Bart’s GCSE and A Level art students displayed their stunning work in a week long art exhibition at the theatre. It was a thoroughly entertaining evening enjoyed by the performers and the audience.

Grand Reunion Weekend on 3 and 4 July

St Bart’s looks forward to welcoming around 1,000 visitors to the ONA’s Grand Reunion weekend on 3 and 4 July. Most of the visitors will remember their favourite lessons and the rooms in which they were held at Luker and Wormestall. Students will be giving guided tours, and in some cases showing relatives around. Further details about the event are on the ONA website www.oldnewburians.co.uk

Investors in Careers Award

St Bart’s is the first state school in West Berkshire to achieve the prestigious Investors in Careers Award in recognition of the high quality of careers education information advice and guidance given to all students. The process of application has taken two years and entailed rigorous assessment including two independent external inspections.

A plaque has been presented to the school by Chris Greaves, Manager of Connexions, Berkshire’s career advice service. At the presentation were two Year 12 students who have helped throughout the application process. Receiving the award were Headteacher, Mrs Haddrell and School’s Careers Coordinator, Mr McGall. Also pictured is Phil Murphy, Career Development Advisor for Connexions Berkshire.

Investigating Academy Status

Last month the Government announced legislation which will allow the Department for Education to approve schools converting to Academy status. Schools have been invited and encouraged to register their interest.

St Bartholomew’s School has been keeping abreast of this development and, as with any education initiative, the school and governors need to be fully informed. Registration of interest means that the school will receive detailed information about what Academy status means. This will enable St Bart’s to give careful consideration to what the best option might be for the school community in the future.

Currently students at St Bart’s benefit from a wide range of curriculum subjects and extra curricular activities. The school is also focused on the new build and the move which takes place in October 2010. St Bart’s enjoys a very positive working relationship with the Local Authority, not only in terms of the building project, but in a wide range of contexts.
