Congratulations to Chris Evans, Aidan Marshall, Holly Titford and Luke Sawyer on this outstanding achievement. These places have been offered following a rigorous entry procedure and reflects the hard work by the students, staff and families put into their education. They are pictured with Mr Davis, Head of Sixth Form and Mrs Haddrell, Headteacher.

A large number of the Year 13 students have been applying to a range of universities and higher education courses and many have received very good offers and are now working towards these targets.

New Outdoor Sports Facilities Opened

Alex unveiled a plaque at a whole school assembly and gave students an inspirational presentation.  She then spent the afternoon with the PE department running various sports activities. This involved the Year 11 sports leaders who worked with groups from four local primary schools specially invited for the day’s celebration. Alex also helped a Year 9 netball lesson doing some warm up exercises. The afternoon concluded with a question and answer session with the sports leaders.

Oliver!

oliverThe first large scale production in the school’s new buildings saw actors, musicians and dancers take to the stage to perform Oliver! On each of the three evenings more than 99 students appeared in the show, 11 in the orchestral Combo and a further 35 supporting in other areas. The recreation of Victorian London with the effective use of 5-level staging, lighting design, evocative scene projections, dance and physical theatre captivated the audience from the moment they entered the Hall. Students had worked hard since September to rehearse and prepare for the event which was hailed a tremendous success.

Team Wins Regional Competition

kids-lit-team-winners-st-bartsA team of Year 8 students won the Berkshire/Oxfordshire regional heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz held in Oxford on 25 November. Up against formidable competition the four students tackled a wide range of literary based questions and scored 85.5 points, beating the runners up by just on and a half marks. This achievement qualifies Isobel, Amy, Thomas and Henry for the National Finals at the University of Warwick on 2 December. The students were presented with a trophy, £20 each and certificates.

Industrial Action: Wednesday 30 November 2011

Industrial action by the public sector unions, in response to the proposed changes to public sector pensions, is taking place in workplaces and schools across the country on Wednesday 30 November.

Adequate staffing levels are essential in order to maintain an orderly, safe and productive environment in school. The duty of care for students’ safety and wellbeing is a paramount consideration, when determining whether the school can remain open.  The ATL and NUT teaching unions which took action in June, will be joined by members of the NASUWT, NAHT, GMB and Unison.  The scale of anticipated staff absence is such that it will be necessary, on health and safety grounds, to operate with a partial closure of the school to students, on this date.

On Wednesday 30 November the school will be closed to students in Years 8-11.

School will be open to Year 7.  Year 7 students should report to the Hall.

Students in the ‘Oliver’ production  (actors only in Years 7 - 13) will be able to rehearse throughout the school day.

Where teachers are available to teach their Sixth Form timetabled lessons, students will be informed by letter of the classes which will run as normal on 30 November.

A canteen service will be available as normal during Activity Time.

Should there be a change to the anticipated industrial action planned for 30 November, parents and students will be informed via Schoolcomms and the school website.

Thank you for your understanding and support.
